Guinea Fowl Coop - Camper Conversion

When we decided to build a poultry house for our Guinea fowl, the first thing we did was draw up the plans. Second thing done was pricing all the lumber it would take to build the coop. When all was said and done we were looking at about $1,500.00 for a 10x12 Guinea fowl coop. And that cost did not include the necessary fencing.

Thanks to the internet, we were about to find an eco-friendly alternative to a newly constructed Guinea fowl coop: a camper conversion. Yes, a pull behind camper trailer can be made into the perfect Guinea fowl/poultry coop.

We pulled the old camper to its new, permanent location and then attached fork lifts to the John Deere front end loader. The trailer was lifted and the tires were removed from both sides. The trailer frame was set down onto pressure treated 4" x 4" lumber and leveled. Since 45-50 MPH winds are not uncommon here, we left the trailer tongue apparatus intact for the additional weight and to facilitate strapping it down to ground anchors. Our trailer was now ready to become a Guinea fowl coop.

Along with gutting the interior of the camper, a lot of construction was done to the interior to make it 'Guinea fowl friendly.' We had just built our home so scrap lumber piles were all around our place - we never throw anything away. And that's what we used to make all the repairs and build-outs.

I called into our local radio 'for sale' show and asked if anyone had an old camper for sale. My phone rang a few minutes later with a seller asking only $100 for his 13' Companion Camper from the late 70's. It was perfect! Well, 'perfect' might be too strong of a word. But we could see the potential so we attached it to our truck and brought it home to start the conversion.

So, go ahead and enjoy the photos. I'll be posting more in the coming weeks as we finish up the Guinea fowl coop and get ready for the new keets to arrive in their new coop.
